Hair, hair hair! This is one of the most challenging areas for people when switching over to a truly organic hair care routine. Some people have a rough go when using these products for the first time, especially if they're still using hair products with any -cone ingredients. Make sure to read through this entire section before shopping the hair care items below!
Face Naturals shampoo is made from their exclusive, hand-blended castile soap formula. Be sure to balance your hair care routine by following up with your favorite FN conditioner.
Tips On Using Face Naturals Shampoo From Serendipite Organiques
If you are new to using non-detergent, soap-based shampoos there are a few things to keep in mind. Many factors come into play, such as water hardness, whether or not you chemically treat your hair, whether or not you use commercial styling aids (mousse, gel, pomade, etc.), and the last time you used a detergent-based shampoo. Face Naturals shampoos will not suds up the way you may be used to. Because of this, some people tend to use too much (I’m still guilty of this at times, even after using this shampoo since July 2011!). I’ve found it will usually lather more during second shampoo application. Use a quarter size amount for each four to six inches of hair. Make sure to work the shampoo into your scalp with your fingers, rather than just using your palm. Working it in with your palm makes the application heavier. Some people will go through a “detox phase” where their hair will feel oily and heavy. Should you experience this you can help speeding the process along by squeezing shampoo into your hand then mixing a spoonful of baking soda in to make a paste. Gently scrub into roots first, then work your way down to ends of hair. Make sure to rinse well. Your hair should feel squeaky, not slippery. Repeat if you do not get this effect. Residue from your old hair products will shed for several days– especially if you use silicone-based products. Silicone and waxes coat your hair strands with each use. Products promising to ‘add shine’ or ‘repair split ends’ are the worst offenders. The percentage of petroleum-based silicones and waxes in such products runs quite high. Are you still using any styling aids (gel, mousse, hair spray, etc.)? If so, please check the labels for any kind of -cone ingredient? If so, you may be applying petroleum-based silicones and waxes back into your hair each time you use them. Silicone-based conditioners and petrochemicals in most shampoos actually build up on your hair.
Remember your scalp produces oil to protect the skin. People frequently have chronically oily skin as a result of over-cleansing, thus causing the skin to produce more oil for compensation. As your scalp gets used to products that do not strip it, your hair may feel oilier than you are used to. Eventually, your hair will detox itself of the chemical coating and the scalp will balance out oil production. Give the process some time and patience, as the detox process can last up to about four weeks, depending on the person. Follow up with Face Naturals Conditioner.
How To Use Face Naturals Conditioner From Serendipite Organiques
Work a small amount of Face Naturals conditioner through the hair and scalp. Concentrate the bulk of conditioner on the ‘free’ length of your hair, finger-combing the remaining amount through the scalp to keep your hair from feeling heavy, then rinse out lightly. Heavy rinsing at this step can result in removing the acid balance the conditioner is designed to provide. If you’re not using enough conditioner, the soap may actually stick to your hair. Vinegar in the conditioner helps re-acidify the scalp environment. The slight vinegar scent will dissipate as hair dries. I actually find the scent pleasing! Your hair and scalp normally prefer a slightly acidic pH. Soap-based shampoos like Face Naturals have an alkalinity that removes excess oils and debris.
